Immigration description Article
The 37th America’s Cup will be held in Barcelona in autumn 2024. An event that could be a great opportunity for attracting public-private investment and for the projection of Barcelona and Spain in the sporting and economic sphere (an estimated impact of 1,000 million euros and job creation of between 21,000 and 30,000 jobs).
It is also expected that the vast majority of participants will be third country nationals, that is non-EU members of the European Union. Their profiles are diverse, ranging from engineering professionals, technical profiles, sailors, communication and logistics professionals, sailors, sports medicine professionals, nautical professionals and international event managers.
Given that most professional profiles are difficult to fit into the current immigration legislation, the Council of Ministers has opted to approve a new procedure for entry and stay for economic reasons of national interest for all America’s Cup professionals. This is a streamlined procedure, very similar to other permits under the same Entrepreneurs Law, such as for qualified professionals or those in the audiovisual sector, and will allow them to reside and work in Spain from 2023 to 30 April 2025. In other words, the permit itself takes into consideration the preparation work required for the competition itself (training, construction and training of sailing boats), but also the dismantling of the facilities themselves.
It also enables participants to stay in Spain with their direct family (spouses or partners, minor or dependent children and dependent relatives in the ascending line) and apply for the permit simultaneously or successively.
If you are a foreign professional or a company bringing foreign professionals to Spain to participate in the preparation or celebration of the 37th America’s Cup in Barcelona, you can contact our team to manage the immigration procedure on your behalf.
