During the third quarter of 2024, the Spanish mergers and acquisitions (M&A) market showed remarkable dynamism. According to the TTR report, the total capital mobilised in this market grew by 27%. Up to September 2024, a total of 2,319 M&A transactions were registered, both announced and closed, reaching a cumulative value of 74.677 billion euros.
Breakdown by type of transaction
- Mergers and acquisitions: M&A transactions were the most numerous, with a total of 949 transactions and a cumulative value of 38.065 billion euros.
- Private equity: the private equity sector registered 302 transactions, totalling 23.384 billion euros. This segment continues to be attractive for investors seeking growth by buying stakes in Spanish companies.
- Venture capital: 434 venture capital transactions took place, reaching a total value of 2.128 billion euros.
- Asset purchase: with 636 transactions, this category mobilised a total of 11.1 billion euros, underlining the importance of strategic assets in the M&A market.
Most active sectors
The real estate sector is the most dynamic in 2024, with a total of 449 transactions up to the third quarter. Despite this leading position, the sector experienced a slight decrease of 4% in transaction volume compared to the same period in 2023. Nevertheless, this slight decline did not affect its position as the most active sector.
International investments
Spanish companies maintained their interest in expanding internationally, with the following destinations standing out:
- Portugal: 49 operations, consolidating the Spanish companies’ affinity with the Portuguese market.
- United States: 42 operations, reflecting the Spanish companies’ interest in accessing a highly competitive and extensive market.
- Italy: 41 operations, indicating a strategic focus on nearby European markets.
At the same time, foreign investments in Spain also showed considerable activity in the third quarter of 2024, with special interest from key countries:
- United States: 147 operations, consolidating its position as one of the main investors in the Spanish market.
- France: 130 operations, underlining the importance of the economic relationship between the two countries.
- United Kingdom: 112 operations, despite the challenges of Brexit, British interest in Spain remains strong.
