The Spanish mergers and acquisitions market experienced significant growth in 2024, with an 8% increase in the total number of transactions and a cumulative value of €95.971 billion, according to the annual TTR report. This result reaffirms Spain as one of the most attractive investment destinations in Europe.
Breakdown of completed transactions
The TTR report reveals that mergers and acquisitions were the most frequent transactions, with 1,476 deals, representing a cumulative value of €49.039 billion. Regarding private equity, the market recorded 343 transactions totaling €27.620 billion, highlighting investors’ interest in companies from various sectors. Meanwhile, venture capital recorded 658 transactions with a cumulative value of €3.407 billion, reflecting the continued attraction of funds for startups and growing companies.
Additionally, asset acquisitions were another key aspect of the market, with 915 transactions and a total value of €15.772 billion. This type of transaction has been particularly significant in the real estate sector and other strategic markets such as technology.
Key sectors in motion
The real estate sector remains one of the most active, with 646 transactions, although experiencing a slight slowdown of 2% compared to 2023.
The IT sector, with 330 transactions, has also shown signs of deceleration, dropping 4% compared to the previous year. However, its relevance remains significant due to its potential for innovation and growth, especially in a rapidly digitalizing environment.
The international expansion of Spanish companies
Spanish companies have maintained their international expansion strategy, seeking new opportunities to strengthen their global presence. In 2024, the preferred destinations for Spanish investments were Portugal, the United States, and Italy, with 70, 60, and 53 transactions, respectively. This interest in international markets highlights the ability of Spanish companies to diversify their portfolios and seize opportunities in high-growth economies.
International interest in the Spanish market
While Spanish companies look abroad, foreign investments in Spain have also shown a positive trend. International investors continue to see Spain as an attractive market, with 241 transactions carried out by U.S. companies, 200 by French firms, and 163 by British investors. This interest reflects the confidence of global players in the stability and appeal of the Spanish market, particularly in sectors such as energy, infrastructure, and technology.
